Silver Star citation
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Joseph F. Lorette (MCSN: 470115), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company F, Second Battalion, Twenty-fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Marianas Islands, on 9 July 1944. Defying intense and accurate rifle and machine-gun fire from hidden caves and rock crevices during the final enemy resistance, Corporal Lorette bravely volunteered to evacuate wounded personnel lying in exposed positions. Constantly in the line of enemy fire and faced by many problems in carrying the wounded over jagged coral rock and up a precipitous cliff, Corporal Lorette, assisted by others in his group, completed this difficult task after five hours of hazardous and painstaking labor. His gallant conduct, courageous initiative and resolute fortitude throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
