José Manuel Mendonca Sena (born 13 July 1955) is a Portuguese middle-distance runner. He won four Portuguese Athletics Federation national championships, set the Portuguese record in the 3000 m steeplechase, and competed in the at the 1980 Summer Olympics. Career At the 1979 European Cup match in Luxembourg, Sena won the 10,000 metres in a time of 29:17.5 minutes. After 4 laps into the race, Sena had opened up a gap of about . The runner-up stayed about five seconds behind until 3000 m but Sena extended his lead to ten seconds by 5000 m, which he crossed in 14:33. He won the race by 50 seconds. Sena was runner-up at the January 1980 Saint Silvester Road Race. He led the race for 11 minutes until Herb Lindsay passed him, and beat the previous course record-holder Victor Mora. He also was a runner-up at the previous year's edition. He represented Portugal at the , , , , , , and . His best individual finish was 30th at the 1980 championships, with a best team finish of 6th at the 1983 championships. At the 1980 Olympics, he didn't finish his 3000 m steeplechase heat. Sena ran a 1984 Olympic qualifying time, but he did not compete at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. Sena set the Portuguese national record over the 3000 metres steeplechase of 8:28.9 in 1980. He broke Manuel Oliveira's record which had stood for 15 years. He represented Portugal 13 times over his career and won four Portuguese Athletics Federation national championships. Personal life Sena trained with the FC Porto club until 1981. He represented Sporting CP in 1982 before returning to FC Porto in 1983. In 1984, he represented S.L. Benfica.
