Jonathon Payne is a fictitious character created by American author Chris Kuzneski. Payne was introduced in Kuzneski's debut novel, The Plantation, and has appeared in each of his novels since. They include Sign of the Cross, Sword of God, and The Lost Throne.
Biographical Information Jonathon (Jon) Payne is a retired Special Forces officer and former commander of the MANIACs — an elite Special Forces team comprised of the best soldiers in the United States military. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis where he played college football and basketball. Payne retired from the Navy as a captain when his paternal grandfather passed away, leaving Payne the family business: a hi-tech company known as Payne Industries. It is headquartered in Payne's hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where Payne remains the company's CEO, mostly in a figurehead capacity.
Payne's parents were killed by a drunk driver when Payne was still a teenager. He moved in with his grandfather, who encouraged him to attend a military academy in order to learn the discipline that his father never had a chance to teach him. While at Annapolis, Payne excelled in hand-to-hand combat and quickly caught the eye of his instructors who recommended him for the soon-to-be-formed MANIACs. That is where he met his best friend , who has partnered with Payne in every novel.
Physical Appearance Payne has the build of an NFL linebacker. He stands 6'4" and weighs 240 pounds. He has light-brown hair and hazel eyes. His body is decorated with bullet holes and scars. His exact age is never given, but he is described as being in remarkable shape for a man in his thirties.
