John David Shallman (Born February 29, 1964) is an American political strategist, crisis management expert and bestselling author. He is President and CEO of Shallman Communications, a political consulting and public affairs firms in California. Early life and career Shallman was born in Rock Island, Illinois, the son of William and Saralie Shallman. Shallman is a graduate of Rock Island High School where he served as President of the Student Senate and an elected student representative to the Rock Island School District Board of Education. Shallman went to the University of Iowa and the London School of Economics and graduated with a degree in Economics in 1986. Shallman also serves on the Board of Directors of Campbell Hall Episcopal School in Los Angeles where he is now the Chairman. Among Shallman’s first campaigns were, Mark Takano for Congress in 1992 and Richard Riordan for Los Angeles Mayor in 1993. In 1993, Riordan appointed Shallman to serve as President of the Los Angeles Transportation Commission becoming the youngest in history at 28 years old. Shallman managed Loretta Sanchez’ campaign for Congress. Sanchez ran against entrenched conservative Congressman Bob Dornan in a conservative Orange County district that had never been held by a Latina, and had not been held by a Democrat in many years. Sanchez defeated Dornan by 984 votes. After Sanchez's victory, Shallman led dozens of high profile campaigns including Steve Cooley’s upset win over incumbent L.A. County District Attorney Gil Garcetti, the D.A. who failed to convict O.J. Simpson. Shallman's debut novel, Return from Siberia, published by Skyhorse Publishing in August 2020 became a national bestseller in its first week of print. The LA Times profiled his propensity for pulling off political upsets in their article entitled, “He’s Led Political Dark horses to Surprising Wins.”
