John Jay Scholar

John Jay Scholar (alternatively, John Jay National Scholar) is a designation applied to the undergraduates deemed most outstanding by the admissions committee at Columbia University, a member school of the Ivy League. The honor is bestowed upon acceptance and is named after the first Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court.
Columbia claims its John Jay Scholars "distinguish themselves by demonstrating an exceptional level of original and independent thought, as well as a rich and varied record of accomplishment."
The few students selected as John Jay Scholars belong to the university's Scholars Program, whose members are chosen for their "intellectual pursuits, extracurricular achievements, and promise for future growth and exploration."<ref name=SA /> Members are also said to "demonstrate capacity to apply their intellectual gifts to better serve society."<ref name=SA />
Former John Jay Scholars have gone on to hold academic positions around the world at universities such as Princeton, Berkeley, Cornell, NYU, Brown, The Rockefeller University, Boston College, George Mason University, St. John's University, the University of New Mexico, Tel Aviv University, and the University of Warwick.
