John Devotion Bidwell

Background
John Devotion Bidwell was the grandson of Adonijah Bidwell, the first minister of Township No. 1. He was the third son of Adonijah the Younger and Milliscent Dench, one of twelve children. Born in 1792, he purchased the Rev. Adonijah Bidwell House from his father in 1836 for "love and affection and one dollar". John Bidwell was 44. In 1837 he added the Greek Revival/Carraige Barn addition to the house.

Family Life
He married Luna Welch and had four children: Louisa Bidwell (1819-1875), John Bidwell Jr. (1824-1897), Phebe Bidwell (1829-1897), and Alice Bidwell (1834-1912).


Adult Life
In 1847, when the town of Monterey, Massachusetts was incorporated, he was among the three original selectmen. He enjoyed a successful career as a farmer and a tanner until his death in 1867 at the age of 75.
