John Calvin Hill

John Calvin Hill (1828 - January 14, 1899), called Cad in his lifetime, was a corporal in the Confederate Army. He began service by first joining up the 1st Mississippi Cavalry in 1862, which was under the command of Col. Richard Alexander Pinson. Later in the war, he was transferred to the 1st Battalion, Mississippi Sharpshooters and given a battlefield commission to corporal.
Early life
John Calvin "Cad" Hill was born to William and Mary Patsy Shaw Hill in 1828 in Knox County, Tennessee. He had four older siblings, Daniel Henry, Mary, Samuel Shaw and Martha Hill, and two younger siblings, James Benjamin and Frances Hill. His parents were farmers who moved from around Johnston County, North Carolina, to Knox County and eventually settled in Noxubee County, Mississippi. Cad worked as a farmer, like his parents, and on December 14, 1856, he married Margaret Brandon, who was from Greene County, Alabama. The two resided in Noxubee County but soon moved to Pickens County, Alabama. They had two children around that time, John, who was born in 1858, and Ella who was born in 1860. After their short time in Alabama, the Hills moved back to Noxubee County just as the state of Mississippi started to secede.<ref name=JLB/>
Military service
With the American Civil War starting, and with Mississippi seceding from the Union, Cad enlisted with the Confederate States Army in Noxubee County in 1862, just after the birth of his twin sons, William and James. He enlisted along with his three brothers. Cad was assigned to the 1st Mississippi Cavalry Co. F.<ref name=JLB/>
