Johann Peter Steltz (October 24, 1745 - May 24, 1833) was a New Hanover, Pennsylvania farmer who served in the American Revolutionary War. Biography Johann Peter Steltz was born in Europe on October 24, 1745. He arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1749 with his parents and other members of his family. He was a member of the Falckner Swamp Reformed Congregation, a church still in existence today under the name of New Hanover Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gilbertsville, Pennsylvania. According to a 2019 report, Steltz's "name is etched in the stone of our present sanctuary, indicating that he was among those who constructed the building in 1767." In 1777, his congregation offered their building as a temporary hospital for retreating American forces following the Battles of Brandywine and Paoli. Steltz enlisted as a Private in the 4th Battallion, Philadelphia County Militia and appeared on the muster rolls in 1780 through at least November 26, 1781. According to church records, Steltz had six children between 1772 and 1784 with his first wife, Gertrude/Gertraut, who died on October 9, 1784, a few months after the birth after their last daughter. He married his second wife, Susana Grub, in 1785. In 1786, Steltz reported that an indentured servant named Christian Helm had run away from his farm. Steltz died on May 24, 1833 in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. He is buried in the Falkner Swamp Reformed Church Cemetery.
