Joe Ephgrave was a fairground artist who designed The Beatles' drumskin placed at the center of the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover. The cover itself was designed by Peter Blake and Jann Haworth. Joe was well known in the fairground world at the time of The Sgt. Pepper commission. The style used on the drum he dubbed 'the futuristic style'. Supporters of the Paul is dead conspiracy argue that Joe Ephgrave was not a real person, and that his last name was code for "EPITAPH + GRAVE". On July 10, 2008, the Sgt. Pepper's drum was auctioned at Christie's in London along with other rock memorabilia from the era. The drum was sold for 541,250 GBP (1.07M USD), the highest price paid for any object at the event.
