Jimbobbing (from the Latin literally translating to ‘stolen voice’) is a literary or rhetorical device, in which there is an incongruity between how a friend should behave and how he/she does behave. Describing the event of causing displeasure through deliberately and maliciously deflating the physical or mental well being of a friend/acquaintance through an act of shear selfishness or ignorance. There is some argument about what qualifies as jimbobbing, but all senses of jimbobbing revolve around the perceived notion of an incongruity between how a friend should behave and how one does behave. Definitions The definition of Jimbobbing, in the simplest form, is the difference between what someone would reasonably expect to happen and what actually does. With particular emphasis on the behaviour of ones friend, and the betrayal of this expectation. Meaning that, if a friend behaves in a way that you would not reasonably expect, he has jimbobbed you. The word Jimbobbing, is not used as the verb describing the person (as for dog), but rather the act, as in the case of Led Zeppelin, and the accusations of stealing songs, lines and riffs. Types of Jimbobbing Jimbobbing may be defined according to the following: *Technical Jimbobbing To knowlingly steal a song from one’s friend, to gain an unfair advantage in the pursuit of winning the crowd over as fans, in a head to head contest with said friend. *Situational Jimbobbing is the disparity of intention and result: when the result of an action is contrary to the desired or expected effect bringing about Jimbobbing. Occuring through discomfort caused as a result of ignorance and often drunkeness. For example - one may talk to someone of a foreign background working as a taxi driver or waiter in a condescending manner after several drinks - this may be perceived as Jimbobbing. *Common Jimbobbing Is to knowingly cause physical or mental displeasure to friend through a delibrate act of betrayal. Occurances of Jimbobbing Everyday occurrences of blatant Jimbobbing are becoming such a blight of society, in an attempt to rid the world of this unashamed treatment of friends social networks are establishing subgroups to share tales of this heinous act, and to suggest means to revenge/cure this particular instance. Medium success has been achieved thus far, but it is hoped that awareness will be first real step in curbing this anti social behaviour.
