Jim Nelson is an American Democratic politician from Georgia.
Early career and background Nelson served as an Airborne Infantry Officer during the Vietnam War and more than a decade in the Army Reserve and National Guard. Nelson holds four higher-education degrees: B.A. Speech and Theater, M.A. History and Political Science, Master of Divinity, and a Doctor of Ministry. He has taught religion, humanities and communications as a faculty member at multiple universities.
Nelson works as a United Methodist pastor in Savannah. Prior to entering ministry, Nelson worked in the corporate world for companies such as IBM, Lockheed, GE, and Apollo Computer.
A long-time community activist, Nelson has been a leader of local groups such as S.A.F.E. Shelter and the Savannah Mediation Center. He has also served as a hospital and prison chaplain. Nelson and his wife have four children and four grandchildren.
In 2004, Nelson founded the not-for-profit World Changing Faith with the expressed intent of "educat(ing) people about issues involving Faith and Politics". In the same year, Nelson's book, Where would Jesus Put the Sidewalks?: A Study of Faith and Politics: A Mostly Holy Alliance (ISBN 978-1592990832) was published.
Political career In 2006, Nelson was an unsuccessful candidate for running for the U.S. Congress in the state of 's First U.S. House District against incumbent Jack Kingston. He was officially endorsed by General Wesley Clark. . In December of 2006, he was an unsuccesful candidate for Chairman of the Georgia's state Democratic party.
