Jesse Mugambi

Jesse Ndwiga Kanyua Mugambi is Professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies at the University of Nairobi, Kenya, and a Member of the Kenya National Academy of Sciences (MKNAS). In 1990-91 he was Visiting Mellon Distinguished Professor at Rice University, Houston, Texas, in the Department of Religious Studies. His Doctoral Thesis, completed in 1984 at the University of Nairobi, was on Ludwig Wittgenstein, focusing on problems of meaning in discourse with reference to religion. His professional training is in Education, Communication and Management. His academic training is in Philosophy, Religious Studies, Theology, Literature and History. His research interests include Applied Ethics and Ecology. His honorary service has been mainly the Ecumenical Movement at the local, national, regional, continental and global levels.
On Leave of Absence from his professorship at the University of Nairobi he has served as Director of Starehe Boys Centre, Nairobi (2007-08); Visiting Professor at UNISA Department of Missiology (2000); Visiting Professor at Emmanuel College, Toronto (1999); Senior Consultant for Development and Research at AACC (1994-97); Visiting Mellon Distinguished Professor at Rice University (1990-91); Registrar (Academic) in the University of Nairobi (1990-94); Visiting Scholar at Christian Theological Seminary, Indianapolis (1982-83). He was Theology Project Secretary for the World Student Christian Federation (WSCF) Africa Region in 1974-76.
He was born on 6 February 1947 at Kiangoci in Embu District, Kenya; trained as a teacher at Machakos College, Kenyatta College and at the University of Nairobi. He pursued theological and philosophical studies at Westhill College, Birmingham, UK. Before entering academia he taught English in high school and worked as a tutor for Religion in a teacher training college. During that period of his career he was involved in curriculum reform for Religious Education in Kenya.
