Jenny Gomez

Jenny Gomez is a shoe shiner notable for excellence at her craft and who was the subject of an article in The Wall Street Journal by Ralph Gardner Jr. in September of 2010. Gardner wrote that her "impeccable standards ... never flag" and that she makes customers feel like they've "assumed a throne." According to Gardner, Gomez arrived in the United States in 2002 and left behind her husband and two children and "hasn't seen them since."<ref name=twsOctQX/> Gomez shines 30 to 40 pairs of shoes each day and works at 77th Shoe Repair in New York City at 77th Street and Lexington Avenue.<ref nametwsOctQX/> Her technique is to massage the shine, according to Gardner, and has a loyal clientele, and sometimes gets tips from people dropping by in limousines.<ref nametwsOctQX/> She works from 7:30am to 6:30pm each day and rents an apartment in Queens, N.Y..<ref nametwsOctQX/> She learned the craft from a sister-in-law.<ref nametwsOctQX/>
