Jean-Marc Valin

Jean-Marc Valin is a software developer. He is developer of audio compression technology, known as the creator of the widespread Speex format that specialises in coding speech signals, creator of the Opus predecessor CELT, and therefore the co-creator of the audio Opus. He is involved with the development of various other multimedia formats at the Xiph.Org Foundation. He is a member of the IEEE Signal Processing Society.

Education

Valin studied at the University of Sherbrooke in Québec, Canada. He earned a Bachelors degree in electrical engineering in 1999, a Masters degree in 2001, and a doctorate in 2005. His doctoral thesis offered a presentation of a system for auditive technology for a mobile robot.

Professional background

Valin worked for InfoSpace Speech Solutions (2001), for the Information and communications technology center of the national Australian government body for scientific research known as the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation and for Octasic Inc., where he focused on speech communication and speech recognition systems. In 2002, Valin started working on Speex with help from David Rowe (Codec2), who has already had more practical experience with codec design. In July 2011, Valin began working on Opus as Senior Platform Developer at the Mozilla Corporation. , he is working on the development of a free video compression format known as Daala, which is designed to offer a free alternative to HEVC/H.265.
