F.X. Jayliano Hart was born in 1911 in San Polo, a small town near Venezia, Italy. His family is well known as Coffee Master from generation to generation. He is 8th generation of Hart family, son of F.J. Alessandro Hart and grandson of F.X. Benito Hart.
At a relatively young age, F.X. Jayliano moved to Venezia in 1934 to run his own coffee shop named “Paradiso Caffe”. His coffee shop attained a great success. F.X. Jayliano or “Casablanca” as his customers used to call him ( ignoring his great talent as Coffee Master since he was an extremely good looking man and a celebrated playboy in Venezia ) made lots of Coffee variants, some of them known as “Italian Beauty” ,“Coffee Truth”, and many more.
In 1936 he met Tonio Paladini and they both soon became best friends. It was said that they were like “ water and coffee”, close as brothers. Tonio Paladini was a well known barista. He won Venezia Barista Championship for 4 years in a row until he refused to take part in the competition the following year.
In 1942 , F.X. Jayliano “The Casablanca” married Valeria Santini however on the same day Tonio died in a car accident while on his way to attend Jayliano’s wedding. It was reported that Jayliano collapsed in his wedding after hearing the news about Tonio’s death. Terribly distressed by the lost of his best companion, he closed down Paradiso Caffe and moved back to his hometown around one month after the tragedy.
Jayliano bear a deep feeling of guilt for Tonio’s death. According to his wife even in his dream, Jayliano frequenly cried “ If I were not married..” or “ I am sorry Tonio…” It took Jayliano approximately 2 years to get rid of this guilty feeling and to go back to normal life.
After a long break, F.X.Jayliano the “Coffee Master” went back to his Coffee world, this time focusing his life in achieving something spectacular. His ultimate aim is “To Make Coffee That Tastes Tonio” like what his wife said. During this time Master Jayliano often lost control of time management. He worked days and nights accompanied by his unforgettable memories of Tonio. Despite his lengthy and unrelenting efforts , Jayliano could not achieve this aim. In 1950 he made up his mind to volunteer his life as a Catholic missionary, serving in many countries while keep trying to formulate his Masterpiece.
In 1975, while he was serving in North Sumatera, a province of Indonesia, he found the best coffee bean he has ever known, a superbly high grade coffee bean from a small city called “Sidikalang”.
At that place he finally completed his Masterpiece of Coffee which was firstly named “Tonio” but later for some reasons being renamed to “Fratelli” means Brothers.
In his joy and tears he screamed “No Coffee will ever have the taste of everlasting brotherhood but this Coffee”. He made lots of Coffee in his lifetime but “Fratelli” is truly his greatest Masterpiece.
One year after he founded Fratelli, he left Indonesia to continue his missionary works in other countries . There are rumours that he handed over the receipt of “FRATELLI” to a family of coffee maker in Indonesia that he too called "Brothers".
