Jasper Matthews "Ginger" Batey (7 July 1891 - 23 October 1916) was an English professional midfielder who played for South Shields, Portsmouth, and Brighton & Hove Albion. Personal life Nicknamed "Ginger" after the popular Batey's beer, Batey enlisted into the 17th (Service) Battalion, Middlesex Regiment, better known as the Footballers' Battalion, at the outbreak of the First World War. He was transferred to the Army Cyclist Corps after his enlistment. He was serving as a private when he was killed in action on 23 October 1916 in France. He is buried at Cambrin Military Cemetery.<ref name="CWGC" />
