Janissaries IV: Mamelukes

Janissaries IV: Mamelukes is the working title of the fourth book in the Janissaries series of science fiction novels, written by Jerry Pournelle. Unlike the two previous books in the series, Pournelle is writing this installment as sole author.

On October 7, 2006 Pournelle posted the first three chapters of Mamelukes on his website .

Plot introduction

As an unpublished work, little is known of the plot of this book, but from what Pournelle has written about it and from the sample chapters he has posted on the web, the novel will contain all of the characters in the previous books, and will introduce a good number of new ones. The action is expected to be quite vigorous.

The book begins immediately where Janissaries III: Storms of Victory left off, that is, at the conclusion of the Battle of the Ottarn, in which the forces of Drantos narrowly defeated the combined forces of the Five Kingdoms. The Wanax Ganton is well aware that the victory was due in large part to the unexpected arrival of the Lord Rick on the battlefield, and chafes with that knowledge. When news from the West arrives that the heir to the throne of the High Rexja, the king of the Five Kingdoms, is probably dead, leaving Ganton as one of those with legitimate claims to that throne, events are set in motion that could jeopardize the alliance that Lord Rick has carefully forged between Drantos, Tamaerthon, and Rome.
