Wilbur Junior High School Ray Lyman Wilbur Junior High School, the original name for JLS, which educated 7th to 9th graders, opened on August 18, 1953. Ray Lyman Wilbur was one of the presidents of Stanford University. Well-known architects Birge Clark and Walter Stromguist designed the overall infrastructure of the school. There were only 31 teachers and 650 students. At that time, the mascot of the school was a warrior in scarlet and gray, not the black panther that is the mascot of the school today. The school's name and mascot were changed in 1985 when Jordan Middle School was temporarily closed and Jordan students were relocated to the school. The school colors are now royal blue and white. Jane Lathrop Stanford Middle School has been the school's name since 1985.
High Schools Students at Jane Lathrop Stanford Middle School feed into either Gunn High School or Palo Alto High School. The school was the only one who, at one time, fed all 3 high schools (including the now defunct Cubberley High School).
