Jadwet Family

The Jadwet family is one of the most respected & influential business families of Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
History
The family originally hails from Motavaraccha Village in Surat District of Gujarat, but the business was founded in early 1900's in Mawlamyine city of Myanmar by the patriarch of the family M.C. Jadwet. Their vessels regularly frequented the Nicobar Islands to obtain a cargo of coconuts and arecanuts to be sold in Burma. The influence of the company in the coconut trade can be gauged from the fact that they were the only successful enterprise among several competitors to obtain a 30-year lease over the produce of Great and Little Coco islands from the British government in the early 1930’s.
After the death of M.C. Jadwet, the business was later expanded by his four sons E.M. Jadwet, Y.M. Jadwet, C.M. Jadwet, and H.M. Jadwet. The Jadwets were appointed as the British Trade agents for the Nicobar Islands with an absolute monopoly. They were the first ones to introduce to concept of currency to the Nicobars and also were the first ones to generate electricity with the help of generator sets. The family also played an crucial role in setting up the two apex central tribal cooperative societies in the Nicobars (EHL & MML) along with Bishop John Richardson, and also donated a hospital building in Malacca village.
Today, the Jadwet family is involved in diversified business interests such as hospitality, transportation, trading, distribution, shipping, and logistics. They played a key role in developing the commerce of Port Blair. Hotel Bay Island was the first modern resort in the islands built in 1981 and was designed by the world famous architect Charles Correa. The Jadwet family left the Nicobar Islands and currently is based in Port Blair with its business operations across the islands. Some of the prominent family members include Yusoof Jadwet, who is the Adviser to EHL (Central Tribal Cooperative Society of Car Nicobar), Mr. Mohammed Jadwet, Managing Director of Jadwet Trading Company and was also the longest serving President of Andaman Chamber of Commerce and Industries.
