J. P. McMeekin

J.P.McMeekin (Joseph Patrick) was born in Dublin, Ireland on April 6, 1857. He immigrated to America with his sister, Sarah Ann McMeekin (Millett) and family in 1872, settling in Malad City, Oneida, Idaho according to the US 1880 Federal Census. At the time of the US 1910 census he was residing in Hagerman, Lincoln, Idaho. While living in Hagerman he was noted for his photography as well as his ability to write picturesque descriptions of natural landscapes.
About 1910 he moved to Napa, California, where he painted until the end of his life. He maintained a small cottage and studio in Coombsville, California and often made painting excursions into the area around Napa, as well as Yosemite. After 1916, he confined his artist activities to Napa County where his bucolic landscapes received First Premium Ribbons in local exhibitions. Living only to paint, he suffered bouts of anemia and malnutrition. His work includes landscapes, still lifes, and rural life with cattle and horses in oil, tempera, and gouache. He died in Napa February 12, 1936.
