J Michael Cole

J. Michael Cole is a journalist who covers issues related to the Chinese and Taiwanese armed forces, along with regional security matters and geopolitics. Based in Taipei, Taiwan, Cole is senior non-resident fellow at The University of Nottingham, a research associate with the French Centre for Research on Contemporary China (CEFC), and chief editor of The News Lens International. He has a master's degree in War Studies from the Royal Military College of Canada.
He has covered topics including the transfer of missile technology to Taiwan, the sale to Taiwan of F-16 Fighter jets, and China's development of new armaments. He has also covered LGBT rights in Taiwan, and drawn attention to the issue of China abducting Taiwanese citizens.
He is editor in chief of Thinking Taiwan, operated by the Thinking Taiwan Foundation, which was launched by DPP chairperson Tsai Ing-wen, before she was elected President of Taiwan. Cole has contributed to The Diplomat, Jane's Defence Weekly, The National Interest, the Wall Street Journal, the Christian Science Monitor and the Ottawa Citizen.<ref name="thediplomat1"/> He is a former analyst at the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS).<ref name="thediplomat1"/>
