List of items in Super Mario Bros.
Mushroom

Mushrooms have been featured in many of the Super Mario Bros. games. The most common mushroom is the super mushroom which causes Mario to grow in size. Another common mushroom is the 1-up mushroom, which gives Mario another life. However poison mushrooms do the opposite, and take away one of Mario's lives. There are several other different types of mushrooms that are featured in other Mario Games, including the Life Shroom featured in the .
Fire Flower
Main Article: Fire Flower

The fire flower has been another common Mario Bros. item. In games such as Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3, the fire flower can only be gotten after Mario has gotten a Super Mushroom and is large size. The fire flower causes him to turn into "Fiery Mario" and gives him the ability to throw fireballs at enemies. The fireballs prove effective against many enemies, but doesn't defeat all of them. In Super Mario Galaxy, the fireballs can be used to solve puzzles, although the costume effect in this game is time limited. It has also been featured in many other Mario series. In all three installments of Super Smash Bros., it is an item that acts as a flamethrower. In Paper Mario, they are used as an item, rather than a power-up. They inflict 3 points of damage to enemies with no fire resistance or weakness.

Coins
Coins can be found either within stages or hidden in blocks. In the majority of games, players will gain an extra life for every 100 coins they collect. In the 3D Mario games, collecting coins replenishes health and only 50 are required for an extra life. Additionally, in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, when 100 coins are collected, a Power Star or Shine Sprite is rewarded.

Coin variations
*Golden Coins - Found in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, these are required to access Mario's castle.
*Yoshi Coins - Found in Super Mario World, collecting the 5 coins in a level earns the player with a 1up.
*Blue Coins - Found in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, these are worth 5 coins each and usually appear in time limited circumstances.
*Red Coins - In Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, there are levels in which 8 red coins need to be collected without dying. Collecting all 8 will reveal a Power Star/Shine Sprite.
*Purple Coins - Found in Super Mario Galaxy, after unlocking the Purple Comet, players need to find 100 coins scattered around the level, sometimes within a time limit or in a scrolling level.
*Frog Coins - Found in Super Mario RPG.
*Grand Star Coins - Found in New Super Mario Bros., there are three to be found in each level. These can then be spent on the map screen to unlock new paths.
*? Coin - Found in Super Mario Galaxy, these triggers different events depending on the level, be it the appearance of coins, star bits, musical notes or items, although the level itself may be affected at the same time. (For example, on one level, a ? coin activates a bunch of coins on a planet, but the planet starts to shrink as time passes.)

Starman

The starman is a power-up which grants Mario invincibility for a short while (although if Mario falls into a pit he will still lose a life). While Mario is invincible, he can defeat most enemies by knocking into them. The starman is also featured in Super Smash Bros., granting invincibility from other players. In Mario Kart, the starman allows the player to gain an increased speed and cause other karts to crash.

Warp Pipe
The warp pipe is a means of travel in the Super Mario Bros. series. It is unknown what is within a warp pipe, as characters are usually just seen entering and exiting them. Occasionally, a Piranha Plant will reside in a warp pipe. They can be defeated with a fireball from the Fire Flower.

List of items in Super Mario Bros. 2
Since it was not origianally a Mario story, there were not many new items introduced.

Magic Potion
When Mario finds one of these it makes a door appear out of nowhere taking him to a backwards twilight version of that screenshot that he is in allowing him to collect coins, and special muchrooms improving his HP. Does not work over ladders.

Warp Pots often take the player to a room with an enemy that Mario may kill to get points or throw at other characters.

List of items in Super Mario Bros. 3
In Super Mario Bros. 3, special items were introduced which allow Mario or Luigi to access special powers. In most cases, getting hit in these forms will revert the player back to Super Mario/Luigi.

Raccoon Suit
Featured in Super Mario Bros. 3, this gives Mario or Luigi a raccoon's tail. It allows the player to attack with a tail swipe and glide down slowly when jumping. If the player takes a run up and jumps with his P meter filled, he can continuously fly upwards until his P meter runs out. A key item equipable on the map screen allows Mario or Luigi to have infinite flight until he is hit, changes costume or reaches the end of the level.

Frog Suit
Featured in Super Mario Bros. 3, the Frog Suit allows the player to swim in any direction underwater without having to jump repeatedly, making it easier to navigate obstacles. However, on land, their movement is somewhat limited.

Tanooki Suit
A variation on the racoon suit, featuring all of its abilities, the Tanooki suit also has the ability to turn Mario into an invulnerable statue to avoid enemies.

Hammer Bros. Suit
A suit that lets Mario or Luigi throw hammers just like the Hammer Bros. Additionally, a player can duck using this suit and while in this position, they are invulnerable to fireballs from Pirahna Plants.

Kuribo Boot
Stolen from a Goomba riding one, this lets Mario or Luigi jump around, also being able to defeat enemies such as Spineys without getting hurt. If the player gets hurt, they'll lose the shoe but are protected from the hit.

Music Block
These blocks spring Mario to greater heights and occasionally warp him to the clouds. Items sometimes come out of them as well.

List of items in Super Mario World
Super Feather
Grabbing this grants Mario/Luigi a cape. Its abilities are similar to that of the Raccoon suit, except the player can now glide in the sky, pulling up and diving to maintain flight.

Yoshi Wings
These can only be used when Mario/Luigi is riding a Yoshi. Players can continuously jump to fly until Yoshi gets hit.

Key
Found somewhere hidden in a level, this needs to be carried to a keyhole elsewhere in the level (usually nearby) to unlock a hidden path.

Blue Blocks
Just like the regular blocks you see except blue and can be picked to throw at otherwise unstoppable enemies, help swim faster or break through certain walls.

List of items in Super Mario 64
Wing cap
Lets Mario soar through the air whilst the effect lasts. Flight is activated either by triple jumping or shooting out of a cannon.

Invisible cap
Turns Mario invisible, making him immune to some attacks and allowing him to pass through some surfaces, such as iron meshes.

Metal cap
Makes Mario invincible and allows him to walk underwater.

List of items in Super Mario Sunshine
In this game almost all of Mario's items are extensions of a water pack he is given. When Mario gets the Turbo or Rocket nozzle, they only replace the hover nozzle and the regular spray nozzle is always intact. There are certain levels where Shadow Mario steals this machine and Mario must use his own abilities to progress the level.

F.L.U.D.D.
A water nozzle strapped to Mario's back throughout the entirety of the game, F.L.U.D.D. which stands for Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device, is used as Mario's central attack in order to repel enemies and cleaning up mud in order to unlock new levels.

Hover Nozzle
Two nozzles on either side of Mario that allow him to hover across large gaps or sometimes just to keep from falling off of a ledge.

Rocket Nozzle
Once Mario obtains this feature, he can charge up the water in his pack and reach greater heights and very useful in order to find some hard to reach shines and levels.

Turbo Nozzle
When Mario possesses this, it fan blasts water like a jet, which allows him to run/swim much faster and break through certain doors hiding secret coins.

Water Bottle
Refills water tank.

Fruit
Activates and maintains Yoshi and helps gain 1-ups for special missions.

List of items in New Super Mario Bros.
Mega Mushroom
This grows Mario/Luigi to an enormous size for a short time, crushing everything in his path. The more stuff he is able to crush in the time limit, the more extra lives he'll be rewarded.

Mini Mushroom
Shrinks Mario/Luigi to tiny size, allow them to enter small areas and pipes and walk on water. Jumping on enemies doesn't kill them, and Mario/Luigi is as vulnerable as he is without a Super Mushroom.

Koopa Suit
A blue koopa-shelled suit that activates when Mario is running fast. It curls him up in a shell, having the same effects as throwing a Koopa shell would. It also allows him to duck into his shell while standing in order to avoid enemies and fireballs. He can also swim faster in the water.

List of items in Super Mario Galaxy
Star Bits
Star Bits have three purposes in the game. For every 50 collected, Mario will gain an extra life. Players can also fire Star Bits at enemies to stun them. Finally, Star Bits can be fed to Hungry Lumas, unlocking new galaxies and planets, or in some cases can be exchanged for a 1up or Life Shroom.

? Coin
Collecting this makes something happen, be it the appearance of items or the triggering of an event such as magical music notes.

Music Notes
These sometimes show up after collecting a ? coin. When they are collected, a musical tune, usually from an old Mario game, is played. Something happens when all the notes are collected.

Life Shroom
Increases Mario's maximum health to 6. However, if Mario's health goes below 4, the maximum will be reset to 3.

Bee Shroom
Gives Mario the ability to fly for a short period of time. He can also climb on honeycomb walls and becomes light enough to walk on flowers and clouds, although he can't hit ? Blocks or pick up Koopa Shells in this state. He'll lose this ability if he comes into contact with water or is hit.

Boo Shroom
Turns Mario into a Boo. This allows him to float in the air and pass through walls by shaking the Wii Remote. Like the Boo's weakness in this game, the transformation will be lost when coming into contact with light or water, if he is hit, or activates a Launch Star.

Rainbow Star
Makes Mario invincible for a short period of time. His speed also greatly increases during this period.

Ice Flower
Transforms Mario into Ice Mario for a short period, allowing him to freeze water or lava that he walks on. The Wii Remote can be shaken to skate on the ice platfroms.

Spring Shroom
Traps Mario in a giant coil, allowing him to bounce up extreme heights. Timing jump presses sends Mario higher up, while Wall Kicks are performed automatically. This will wear off if Mario is hit, gets wet or uses a Launch Star.

Red Soar Star
Gives Mario the power of flight for a limited time, similar to Super Mario 64's Flight cap, although less affected by gravity. Mario can pause and hover in mid-air by holding A.

Koopa Shells
Can either be found on their own, or by jumping on a Koopa Troopa. On land, these act as projectiles. Underwater, Mario can ride them at a faster speed than swimming alone, and then fire them. Green shells fire straight whereas Red shells home in on enemies and go faster underwater. In some occasions there are Gold shells, which are used to complete puzzles such as opening a gold chest.
Note: Shells can't be picked up by Bee Mario
