Iowa State–West Virginia football rivalry

The Iowa State-West Virginia football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the Iowa State Cyclones football team of Iowa State University and West Virginia Mountaineers football team of the University of West Virginia.
History
West Virginia and Iowa State first met in 2012 when West Virginia joined the Big 12 conference and is the Big 12's newest rivalry. It could be argued that this rivalry dates back to 1980 when West Virginia stole the plans for Jack Trice Stadium to construct Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium . Before the inaugural meeting the game was unofficially dubbed the Riot Bowl in homage to tendency of Iowa State and West Virginia fans to riot. The game was played on Thanksgiving weekend until 2016.
The rivalry reached new heights in 2018 when Iowa State defeated 6th ranked and undefeated West Virginia, dampening their National Championship hopes and shattering the dreams of Will Grier's Heisman campaign. After the game Iowa State faithful sang John Denver's 'Take Me Home, Country Roads ' further inflaming West Virginia fans.
