International Osteopathic Association

The International Osteopathic Association (IOA) is a professional association based in North York, Ontario serving manual medicine osteopaths in Canada and abroad. IOA states that it promotes the highest ethical standards in patient care with respect to the practice of manual osteopathy. The IOA is active in lobbying for pro-osteopathy legislation and policies, promoting a positive image of the profession, supporting research and offering leadership to advance the manual osteopathy profession. Those manual osteopaths registered with IOA are required to adhere to the IOA code of ethics and professional conduct. International Osteopathic Association was instrumental in establishing June 22nd as the World Osteopathy Day
There are seven osteopathy colleges in Canada teaching in Montreal, Quebec City, Toronto, Hamilton, London, Vancouver, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton. The examining body for manual practitioners is the Canadian Manual Osteopathy Examining Board (CMOEB) which states its purpose is "to establish and maintain uniform high standards of excellence in the manual osteopathy profession and education, primarily but not exclusively by preparing and administering to qualified applicants examinations of superior quality, whereby those legal agencies which govern the manual osteopathic practice within each province and other countries may accept, at their discretion, those individuals who have successfully completed any part of the examinations of CMOEB..." Manual osteopaths who succeed in passing the CMOEB exam are then permitted to join International Osteopathic Association (IOA) and receive a certificate of registration. At this time, no osteopathic associations in Ontario nor the osteopathy colleges in Canada are recognized or accredited by any regulatory authority.
