International Federation of Sports Chiropractic

Fédération Internationale de Chiropratique du Sports (or International Federation of Sports Chiropractic; or "the FICS") was founded in 1987 by Dr. Stephen J. Press, who was serving at the time as Chairman of the International Affairs Committee of the American Chiropractic Association Council of Sports Injuries and Physical Fitness. Dr. Press realized that the World would not recognize the ACA Council as a legitimate World Governing body, and brought the idea to the Council's Board. They initially rejected the concept, so he resigned from the Board effective in 6 months from the date of tendering the resignation) and started calling around the World to arrange a meeting. It turned out that a Dr. Gary Auerbach, of Tuscon, AZ was already in the process of organizing a meeting of the Presidents of the World's national chiropractic associations, and welcomed the idea of Dr. Press' group meeting there to organize as a Sports organization.
Dr. Press then called, Drs' George Billauer, who had been US Olympic Doctor at an Olympic festival; Dr. Pierre Bréton, then Chairman of the Canadian College of Chiropractic Sport Sciences; Dr. John Stump, then President of the ICA Sports Council, and Dr. Noel Patterson, then President of the Australian Chiropractic Assoc. Sports Council, and invited them to sign a charter.
When the meeting took place in London, in 1987, representatives of 23 National Chiropractic Associations were present. Of those who accepted a commitment to join, and subsequently voted on the organization, a unanimous vote was taken to elect Dr. Press its first President.
Subsequently, "the FICS" as it is known today, has is recognized by the International council of Sports Science and Physical Education and the General Association of International Sports Associations and has a contract with the World Games Association to provide Chiropractic Services to the athletes of the World, and is working on official recognition of the International Olympic Committee. It has headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, at the IOC/City of Lausanne joint venture building, where all the World Governing Bodies are quartered, and is administered by the World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC.org) out of Toronto, CAN, which itself is an NGB in the World Health Organization.
