Indiepix

IndiePix is an internet based film distribution company that emphasizes the use of contemporary web technology to make the work of qualified independent filmmakers more readily available to film fans. Their primary focus is on independently produced fiction and non-fiction feature-length motion pictures.
History
IndiePix was founded in 2004, launching as a curated retail store offering a broad selection of top independently produced films from the general wholesale catalog. In 2005, IndiePix began signing films directly with filmmakers whose works met the twin criteria of festival distribution and some award recognition. Throughout 2006, IndiePix increasingly provided finishing funds for projects in order to bring them to DVD release. Included among these projects was "Billy The Kid", a multi award winning film for which IndiePix is credited as Executive Producer. Additional production investments led to the organization of IndiePix Studios in the summer of 2008 and is currently headed by President, Bob Alexander and Director of Acquisitions, Mark de Francis. Distribution activities have been subsequently organized as IndiePix Films under the leadership of the company's Chief Operating Officer, Sally Plourde. A filmography for IndiePix is available on their page on IMDb Pro.
IndiePix launched a subscription, streaming, video-on-demand site in early April, 2011.. The site has a stand-alone presence as a third party store featuring content from IndiePix and other independent film distributors. The presenting sponsor for the launch of the site is Los Angeles Times, joined by Filmmaker Magazine and 12 other independent film websites and bloggers. IndiePix Unlimited features a unique filmmaker compensation formula based on "granular allocation of subscription revenues" instead of the more common "license fee for unlimited exhibition" approach.
IndiePix is based in New York City and employs 15 people.
Technology
Indiepix maintains a patented burn to own system in order to make available DVDs through an internet delivery mechanism. Their Disc Factory software is a small program that manages the download of an IndiePix film from one or more hosts and burning of that film directly to DVD on the user's DVD writer for home use. The download test is a free short film selected from their catalog. DVDs created in this way are mirror copies of discs delivered by postal or messenger services. Download speeds may vary, as the customer is downloading an entire uncompressed DVD. The company reports that average download times are about equal to program run time as download speeds improve across the internet.
IndiePix has also developed a Discovery system. "Discovery" in the IndiePix lexicon is the alternative to recommendation engines such as those used by NetFlix, Amazon, and others. The "Discovery" process relies on the quality of the film synopsis which is read and classified by the "Discovery" software. The process identifies the major themes in each title links them to other titles that have similar themes; 7 themes and 14 titles are presented for each search. A recent description of the "Discovery" function is available on their blog site.
