Acoording to Farooq Sobhan, a retired diplomat from Bangladesh, United States is unpopular in India, as in several other countries in the region.

Anti-American sentiment in politics
Anti-American sentiment is visible in political circle in India. The United States-India Peaceful Atomic Energy Cooperation Act of 2006, under which United States will help India by providing access to civilian nuclear technology and access to nuclear fuel, drew heavy criticism within political circles in India. The communist parties, which support the government externally in the Indian Parliament, described the treaty as the imperialist policy of United States.

Anti-American demonstrations
Anti-American demonstrations have occurred in India. Nationwide demonstrations occurred during Bush's visit to India. On March 2, 2006 over 250,000 people participated in an anti-American demonstration in Mumbai when Bush visited India.

Crime against Americans
There are instances of crime against US citizens in India. Theft of US passports is common in New Delhi, particularly in major tourist areas. US citizens in New Delhi have been the victims of robberies, rapes or other violent attacks.
