I coulda been a contender

"I coulda been a contender" is a line from the 1954 film On the Waterfront starring Marlon Brando. The line is spoken by Terry Malloy (Brando) in response to his brother Charley "the Gent" (Rod Steiger) who reminds him that—before asking him to take a dive—the mob-connected union had fixed boxing matches in his favor as well.
In 2005, a jury consisting of 1,500 film artists, critics, and historians selected "You don't understand! I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I could've been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am" as the third-most memorable American movie quotation of all time.
Robert De Niro as Jake LaMotta re-enacted the speech in Raging Bull (1980).
