Howys de la Pole

Howys de la Pole or Hawise de la Pole sometimes "Gadarn the Hardy" and occasionally Howys ferch Owain de la Pole (1291-c.1353), daughter of Owen de la Pole by Joanna Corbet, and grand-daughter of Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn. As heiress of her only brother, Gruffydd, who d. in 1309, she became a ward of the Crown, being given in marriage, together with the barony of Powys, to John Cherleton or Charlton (q.v.) in the same year. She had two sons — John, second lord Charlton of Powys, and Owen who d. without issue. Hawise was probably buried at the house of the Grey Friars, Shrewsbury. After her demise the de la Pole landholdings in mid-Wales passed from the princely family of Powys Wenwynwyn to the English Charlton/Cherleton family.

The Cherleton of Powis baronetcy itself expired in 1421 and the lordship was inherited by Sir John Grey who had inherited the title on marriage to Lady Joan Cherleton, sole heiress of the baronetcy following the dead of her father, Sir Edward Charlton, 4th Lord of Powis
