HiveOnDemand is an online treemapping service offered by The Hive Group that allows for automated generation, customization, and management of treemap data visualizations. The application is offered via a software as a service model (SaaS).
Background
HiveOnDemand is a treemapping technology offered by The Hive Group, and is billed as "the world’s first on-demand service dedicated exclusively to treemapping." The application, launched in 2009, provides a quick, easy way for individuals and small to medium sized businesses to build, edit and manage dynamic treemaps without the need for specialized IT infrastructure and personnel.
The Hive Group also develops enterprise treemap software used by major corporations and government agencies.
Automatic Configuration
Commercially available treemap offerings typically require dedicated hardware and software, server-side installations, and data preparation... all of which require technical expertise or involvement of dedicated IT resources.
HiveOnDemand automates and streamlines the treemap generation process. Once a user specifies a data source using an intuitive "point-click" user interface, the service automatically builds the treemap and corresponding controls. After the view is generated, end-users can customize treemap settings and defaults.
The entire process, from treemap generation to treemap management is supported without the need for IT resources.
Data Sources
HiveOnDemand automatically handles data from three types of sources:
* Google Spreadsheets (active links reflect live data updates)
* Data copied & pasted from spreadsheet applications such as Microsoft Excel
* files

HiveOnDemand uses Honeycomb’s core treemap generation engine, which utilizes a squarified treemap tiling algorithm.
