Dr Hishmi Jamil Husain Environmental Scientist and Environmentalist, born on 15 September 1979 at Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. He has national and international experience in the field of Environment Management and Sustainable Development. Early Life and Background Hishmi Jamil Husain was born on 15 September, 1979 in Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh. In Syed Muslim family, the third amongst 4 children of Syed Matloob Husain, educationist & writer and Asiya Begum. His maternal grandfather Mirza Jamil Ahmed Baig was noted lawyer at the Hyderabad High Court and founding member of first Minority Chapter. He attended Hali Public School and Islamia College at Firozabad before entering the Aligarh Muslim University, also his grandfather's alma mater. His younger brother Uzmi Jameel Husain is also alumnus of Aligarh Muslim University noted lawyer and writer. Uzmi's recent book on "Woman & Islam A Theological and Legal Enquiry" give insight understanding on preservation of woman rights in Islam. Education He did Bachelor of Science (Hon) Geology, from Aligarh Muslim University Finished Master of Science Forestry Economics & Management from Forest Research Institute, Dehradun, (India). Completed Postgraduate diploma in Universalization of Socioeconomics Securities for the Poor from Institute of Social Studies, (The Hague, The Netherlands), Executive Master in E-Governance from Ecole Polytechnique Federale De Lausanne (EPFL), Lausanne, (Switzerland) and Ph.D in Lithology and Soil Characteristics in Relation to Forest Vegetation of Garhwal Himalaya from Forest Research Institute, Dehradun, (India). Research Work and Development Dr Hishmi Jamil Husain works for spreading awareness among people for environment conservation and sustainable development. Dr Hishmi is highly attentive on human development through sustainable use of natural resources. Realizing the need of conservation of environment for sustainable livelihood, he is working for bringing models of environment development and livelihoods to achieve Millennium Development Goals though environment conservation. To achieve the aims of Millennium Development Goals, he started with research on socioeconomics impact of integrated watershed management. and cultivation of medicinal plants under different agroforestry systems. He worked in the states of Haryana and Uttaranchal on awareness and development of agro-medicinal plant cultivation models. Dr Hishmi worked on inventory of medicinal plant to decide safe harvesting limits. Management and awareness on solid waste management, waste water management, rainwater harvesting, drip irrigation, cultivation of medicinal plant, rehabilitation of wasteland, use of biogas, making of furniture from Lantana (weed), use of solar energy and awareness on flora and fauna conservation for environment development. In local community schools, he is use to give presentations and awareness talks which help the students and local community to aware on environment. issues and the Millennium Development Goals. During his association with Forest Research Institute and Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education, Dehradun, He worked on various projects viz., Ecological Analysis, Medicinal Plants inventorization and harvesting, Development of Agro-mediculture models for Sustainable diversified farming in Haryana and Uttaranchal, Environmental Impact Assessment of Hydro-Electric Project in Bhodighat, Chattisgarh, India etc. He has submitted reports on Socioeconomics Impact of Watershed Management, Environmental Impact and Agro-ecological Analysis, Medicinal Plants cultivation and inventorisation in Morni of Sivalik Hills in Haryana etc. He worked with Amity School of Natural Resources and Sustainable Development, Amity University, Noida, India as Project Manager. He looked projects and trainings for the forest officers on Forest and Environment management and taking classes on environment management. Dr Hishmi Jamil Husain is also an experienced ecologist, has done a series of biological surveys and vegetation studies for sustainable afforestation. He has reported several new snakes from Bundelkhand region. Boiga forsteni (DUMÉRIL, BIBRON & DUMÉRIL, 1854) in India, with a new record from the Chhatarpur District, Madhya Pradesh is one of them. Dr Hishmi Jamil Husain having several research papers and articles in his credit. His also significantly contribute to Environment Management & Sustainable Development, Environmental impact assessment, Livelihood Securities, HSEQ Systems Management Waste Management, Forest Certification, Natural Resource accounting, Social impact assessment(SIA), Ecological Impact Assessment, inventorization, Quantification, Identification, Cultivation, propagation of Medicinal plants and Maintenance of the medicinal plants collection. He has recently had two books published. The first one is entitled Resettlement and Rehabilitation Policy for Mass Entitlements: Dam Affected People. It concerns the resettlement and rehabilitation of peopled affected by the Narmada and Tehri dam projects. The second book is entitled Lithology & Soil Characteristics Related to Forest Vegetation: Role of Parent material and Soils in Sustainable Afforestaion and Rehabilitation (Garhwal-Himalaya) This book provides in-depth knowledge to managers, foresters and land users about the content and nature of minerals present in the soil in diagnosing the fertility status and other soil-plant-parent material relationship in forestry. Dr Hishmi is contributing weekly column to the weekly news paper The Isma Times Achievements and Memberships Dr Hishmi Jamil Husain got several fellowships and recognitions some are Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) Fellowship, UNDP Fellowship, World Bank Fellowship.
