Hervey Bay Triathlon

The Hervey Bay Triathlon was founded in 1987 by Ron Acutt and friends. They first organised and staged the race from the Torquay boat ramp car park on 28 February 1988. 2011 sees the prize pool at a record $25,000 with 2XU assuming the title sponsor role.
History
The first 1.5/40/10 race was an official Bicentennial Event and was won by Peter Stafford of Brisbane. The swim was a 1500 m triangle off the Torquay beach. The bike ride out past the Hervey Bay Airport and back is followed by a loop around Point Vernon with the run down to the Urangan boat harbour and back. The bitumen car-park was a cause of much anguish to the crew as it was very difficult to set up fences and gates using only star pickets. The event was staged under the principle that the priorities were athlete centric: safety, fairness, fun and value.
1999 saw the venue moved 4 km west to current venue at Seafront oval in Pialba with the course remaining basically the same. Over the next eight years it hosted the State Olympic Championships three times and was included in MSM magazine’s “Races of Excellence” series. There have been a few changes around Hervey Bay since the Hervey Bay Triathlon was first staged in 1988, mainly the population has gone from around 30,000 to 63,000 with accommodation, shops and facilities to match.
The 2009 race raised AU$3,000 for the Hervey Bay Hospital Cancer Care team. From 2010 the Hervey Bay Triathlon is being organised by Trifun Events Inc. a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of mass participation multi-sports events.
