Heerodden helicopter accident

The Heerodden helicopter accident was an incident on 30 March 2008 when a Russian Mil Mi-8 helicopter crashed during landing on Heerodden helicopter base outside Barentsburg (a Russian settlement on Svalbard). The captain, the navigator and a passenger were killed and three people were injured. Six people survived the crash. The cause of the accident was probably weather conditions.
The Governor of Svalbard immediately sent medical personnel from Longyearbyen to Barentsburg to assist the Barentsburg medical staff. Two of the three were seriously wounded and were airlifted to Longyearbyen. The crew and the passengers were Russian and Ukrainian, workers of Arktikugol.
