About Hedrick Cooperative

The Hedrick Cooperative House is a cooperative for student housing at Michigan State University. It is the oldest student owned cooperative in East Lansing. It was started in 1939 and was leased and operational by the winter term 1940. It's one of 12 houses that are part of the SHC located in East Lansing.

Hedrick Cooperative History
Wilbur O. Hedrick was a professor for over 53 years, who taught at Michigan State University He was an assistant professor of History and Political Economy. He also taught courses in economics, American Constitutional History, English History, Civil Government, logic, psychology, and ethics.

He was a very popular professor interested in furthering the cooperative movement.

In 1939, with the help of another professor, Orion Ulrey, another professor teaching a course on the Rochdale Principles, an acceptable house for lease was found and the early days of Hedrick House began.

The house was in operation by the Winter term of 1940. Membership was open to any male student who matched their requirements for "good character, willingness to cooperate with other members, and a scholastic average of 1.0 or better" (Hedrick Scrapbook, page 1). Each of the members paid a $10 loan to the house, refundable when the house became self-sustaining, and a $10 deposit. Room and board charges were $5.50 per week which at the time was around 1/3 less than other housing options.

Hedrick House was originally located on 405 Abbott Street and then moved to 903 East Grand River in 1941, after purchasing a house of their own. On January 1, 1954 while the Michigan State Spartans were playing in the Rose Bowl, Hedrick House burned down. The cause was a over-heated furnace. In June 1956 members of Hedrick House constructed a new house at 140 Collingwood, its current location.
