Heather Roche (born March 9, 1983, Victoria) is a Canadian clarinetist. She currently lives in Cologne, Germany. In 2011 in Cologne, along with Niklas Seidl, Stefanie Van Backlé, Daniel Agi, Christoph Stöber and Jens Ruland, she formed the chamber music ensemble hand werk. In the same year, she completed her PhD at the University of Huddersfield with the publication of her thesis, "Dialogue and Creativity in the Creation of New Works for Clarinet" which details close collaborations with composers Alec Hall, John Hails, Pierre Alexandre Tremblay, Timothy McCormack, Scott McLaughlin, Elspeth Brooke and Daniel Vezza. In 2015 she released a solo album, Ptelea, with works by Martin Iddon, Aaron Einbond, Chikako Morishita, Martin Rane Bauck and Max Murray. She has performed solo concerts at festivals for contemporary music including the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival and Music Biennale Zagreb, and at studios for electronics, including CIRMMT and BEAST. In 2011 she premiered Pierre Alexandre Tremblay's La rupture inéluctable, and recorded it in 2013 for Empreintes Digitales. She also appears on Monty Adkin's 2012 album, Four Shibusa along with clarinetist Jonathan Sage. She is a frequent collaborator of composer Thierry Tidrow, and has participated in the premiere of four of his pieces: Fribourgeoiseries (2012, Bern, with ensemble proton Bern), Clarintabile (2014, Vancouver), Manifeste Assi (2015, Cologne, with Niklas Seidl and Liz Hirst) and STYROPORÖS (2016, Cologne, with hand werk). As of January 2017 she is also Reviews Editor for TEMPO and has also written for Divergence Press and for the in house magazine published by ON Neue Musik Köln. She performs regularly with the German accordionist Eva Zöllner, and in a trio with Carla Rees and Xenia Pestova. She has been a guest with ensembles including Ensemble Musikfabrik, tra i tempi, Ensemble Interface, ensemble proton bern, the Riot Ensemble and mimitabu. She studied with clarinetists including Patricia Kostek, Joy Farrall, Laurent Ben Slimane, Michael Collins, Ernesto Molinari, Shizuyo Oka and Harry Sparnaay.
