Considerations in mounting flat panel TV's over the Fireplace
Many people install their HDTV's over their fireplace after making sure the TV can be placed their safely. The best way to do that is to check with the manufacture for what the maximum temperature the television can withstand and then place a thermometer with tape above the fireplace, get the fire blazing and see how hot the thermometer gets. If it is under the maximum then it is safe to install the television above the fireplace.
It is against the National Electric Code to conceal the power cord of your HDTV in the wall. Installing your HDTV against the National Electic Code will void your home owners or renters insurance policy. If you want to conceal your electrical cord the only way to do it to code is to put an electrical outlet behind your TV. Per the National Electrical Code anyone in the U.S. including the home owner, may face civilliability lawsuit (be sued) or held criminally liable for negligently creating a situation that results in loss of life or property.
If you want to conceal your A/V wires in the wall and install an outlet it is recommended that you hirer a professional installation company that can offer both.
