Hariram

To "pull a hariram snow plough" or simply "to pull a snow plough" has come to mean, to come up with a ridiculous idea for a product or mechanism, especially in the engineering field, exclusively for the purpose of getting patent to one's name. The term originated when hariram, a student of the National Institute of Technology-Calicut in India came up with an idea to prevent elephant deaths due to train-elephant collisions in forested areas. The concept was to place a large snow plough like piece in front of the train engine to safely "plough" away the elephants without causing harm. However, the idea did not account at all for the weight of an elephant and hence the impact it would exert on the train. Another idea was to place a recycled plastic core in soap bars to avoid wastage of soap since nobody actually uses th last remains of the bar. However, plastic is more expensive, and more harmful to the environment than and so this idea too proved to have no use at all. The extreme impractical and useless nature of these ideas and several others similar to this gave way to the term which then evolved into a more sophisticated phrase,in the sense that now the phrase implies that the "idea" is birthed with more for the purpose of having a patent than for any other reason.
