Hamster health conditions

Hamster health conditions can include anything from dental problems due to the continuous growth of the teeth to tumors, which can cause cancer. The following list includes many but not all health conditions that can affect domestic hamsters.
Poison and Dangers
One of the biggest threats to hamsters are newspapers. Newspaper should not be stocked in a pet hamster's cage. When the hamster gets ahold of paper with writing or pictures on it and eats the paper, it can hurt the hamster, make it sick, or even kill it.
Another threat is chocolate. It is poisonous to most household pets, even hamsters! Lettuce, too. Lettuce is not good for most rodents and small pets. Hard candy like lemonheads and gumballs can get stuck in the throat and cause suffocating, like sticky candy, which can also cause drooling. Vinegar-based foods can cause a quick and sharp death to hamsters. Cheese can cause stinky feces, leading to cleaning your cage more. Citric fruits like limes, lemons, oranges and grapefruits can make a pet hamster very ill.
Precaution
If you have a sick hamster, you should always:
*Separate the ill from other hamsters in case the disease is contagious.
*Old bedding should be thrown out and replaced.
*Clean and disenfect all toys and parts of the pet's cage.
*Make sure water is always avalible.
*Over time, watch the healthy hamsters for signs of disease that could of possibly spread.
