Hamilton Edmund MacCormac or Hamilton Edmond MacCormac (1801-1859), was an Northern Irish merchant in the Colony of Sierra Leone during the early nineteenth century. MacCormac was a business partner of his elder brother John MacCormac, the father of the timber trade in Sierra Leone, and alongside his elder brother, Hamilton MacCormac pioneered the timber trade in Sierra Leone. Early life and arrival in Sierra Leone Hamilton MacCormac was born in Lurgan, Northern Ireland in 1801 and was a member of the MacCormac family. MacCormac was a younger brother of Dr Henry MacCormac, a well known physician and the uncle of Sir William MacCormac, a distinguished Irish surgeon. Hamilton MacCormac settled in Sierra Leone in the 1820s or 1830s and was a business partner of his brother, John MacCormac, who commenced the timber trade in Sierra Leone. Hami Arrest in Sierra Leone After creating a placard that satirized a son of Governor Alexander Findlay of Sierra Leone, Hamilton MacCormac was arrested without trail and sentenced to several months of imprisonment. After the recall of Governor Findlay, MacCormac was awarded damages in relation to his wrongful imprisonment.
