Hail Storm (Coast Redwood)

"Hail Storm" is the name given to a gigantic Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) discovered on January 30th, 2016, by Mario Vaden, in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park.
The largest living Coast Redwood to date, Hail Storm has a vigorous, live crown, and has the lowest density of wood ever measured in a coast redwood. With a total volume of 1,267 cubic meters, it is the fourth-largest tree in the world, after only three giant sequoias. Its exact location was a closely guarded secret until being revealed in late 2019.
Hail Storm is one of the recent new redwood discoveries occurring after 2014, surpassing the previous volume record holder for a coast redwood, Grogan's Fault, by 73 cubic meters in volume. Other coast redwood discoveries have been kept under even tighter wraps, including a tree known as 'Samurai'. Hail Storm's age is estimated to be only 1,200 years old.
