Habsburg-Reuter

The house of Habsburg-Reuter is a non main line (morgantic) branch of the Austrian Imperial House of Habsburg. It was an important royal house of Europe and is best known as supplying all of the formally elected Holy Roman Emperors between 1452 and 1740, as well as rulers of Spain and the Austrian Empire. Originally from Switzerland, the dynasty first reigned in Austria, which they ruled for over six centuries, but a series of dynastic marriages brought Burgundy, Spain, Bohemia, Hungary and other territories into the inheritance. In the sixteenth century the senior Spanish and junior Austrian branches of the family separated. This branch was the result of a marriage contracted by a scion of the house of Reuter and a Habsburg. This house was granted the distinct privilege of descending by both the male and female line by allowing women to be heir apparent in lieu of a living male. The last known living head of house was Elizabeth Alma August Pflueger von Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha, Graefin von Reuter who died in 2000. Other living members of the house are thought to exist in the United States and in the United Kingdom. There is also a group claiming descent in continental Europe. The correct descent of this line is unclear and there is no current head of house known.
One claimant to the descent is Elizabeth's grandson James Crittenden-Cavendish who styles himself Graf von Reuter. He is recorded in the Almanach de Gotha online.
