Grove Square

History
The Grove Square opened in the 90's with a few shops and it was the only shopping mall in Maple Grove. Later, Arbor Lakes opened and highly competed with Grove Square. Brookdale Center, an old mall in neighboring Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, had many department stores including a JCPenney's. JCPenney's had found interest in Grove Square. JCPenney's would have a bigger store and a new parking lot. JCPenney's later made a deal with the city of Maple Grove for a JCPenney's store. Later, Brookdale Center's JCPenney's closed, and three years later. All department stores in Brookdale closed except Sears and Kohl's, due to bankruptcy. Opus Northwest's selection of the location of the initial property development was due to the fact that "it’s the first major city in upstate Minnesota" and serves as "a major hub for that submarket" drawing consumers from the entire upstate region.
