Grifball is a Halo 3 gametype devised by the guys at Rooster Teeth, makers of the machinima series Red vs Blue. The gametype is much less like regular games of halo and is made to be more of a brutal sport, vaguely similar to rugby or ice hockey.
History The original idea for the gametype came from a video Rooster Teeth had been devising for the release of the new halo 3 map pack. The section of the video was later cut as it was beleived not to be funny enough, especially following on from one of the video's big gags.
Burnie Burns, head of Roosterteeth described the origins of Grifball during an interview with Bungie in this way:
"In Season 4 of Red vs Blue, Sarge is taking potshots with a sniper rifle at his orange soldier Grif, whom he hates. He’s having a great time and blurts out 'This is the best game since Grifball!' That was written about two years ago and we always wondered what kind of game Grifball would have been. That’s why the ball carrier turns orange - everyone in the game is constantly trying to hammer-smash Grif and even if he scores, he explodes. Either way, Sarge wins."
Because they'd made it however, they started messing around with the gametype and found that something seemed fun about the frantic simple nature of it. They've tried many variations using a variety of weapons or items littered about the arena, but have always come back to the classic game.
It is also referenced briefly (before the game concept was invented) in a season 4 episode of Red vs Blue
How to Play
Grifball is an assault gametype, where each team has a goal either end of the field and is given a gravity hammer and an energy sword. In the middle of the field there is a bomb which must be taken to the other side and scored with by dropping on the opponenets bomb platform. The round ends when someone scores and the scoring team is awarded a point. Each game normally lasts 5 rounds, but in the case of the WL08, they last for 9 rounds.
The most common set up is for the game to be 4v4 and the bomb carrier has 300% health and 150% speed. Everyone else has 10% of their usual health and deals twice as much damage as usual.

Glossary
Defenders These are people who will hang back around their goal to be the last line of defence to stop the other team scoring. They tend to excel at using the sword to stop the ball carrier from scoring.
Tanks These are the people on the team that will keep the opponent busy by providing excellant work with the hammer to keep pushing them back. They tend to be particular good with hammers.
Trick Runner These are the people that will grab the ball in order to score it in the opponents goal and have grown adept at doing so, being able to take people down by hitting them with the bomb or by hopping over the enemy at the last second to ride the shockwave from the hammers
Hybrid These people have no speciality in any of the above, but can quickly adapt to the changing situations
WL08
Rooster Teeth have organised and held an official grifball winter league, initially starting with a total of 98 teams. Each team is allowed to have 7 players (4 to play in a game, 3 as reserves).
The 98 teams were split into 9 divisions and play a total of 10 games against the other players in their division.
