Glossary of terms in The Urantia Book
|
The following glossary of terms in The Urantia Book provides short definitions of words and concepts presented in the book, especially those that are unique or defined in a way that differs from more traditional understandings. The glossary is meant to assist people unfamiliar with The Urantia Book who may come across conversations or writings having to do with the readership surrounding it. The list is also meant to be a basic reference guide for terminology a reader is likely to encounter in the book, whether it is examined only briefly or read in more detail.
For a full explanation of a topic, it is best to look for it in the book's extensive table of contents , , , . The definitions below should not be considered complete, since some of the concepts have multiple papers devoted to their development in the book. Neither should the list be considered exhaustive. Many hundreds of additional words could be added, but the list attempts to address only the most commonly used ones. For instance, "angel" and "seraphim" are defined below, but full coverage of the dozens of other terms related to angels — types such as sanobim, supernaphim, tertiaphim, omniaphim, seconaphim, etc., much less all the different classifications of work that angels do — are not included. The book itself often has clear explanations of its terms and should be consulted directly when greater detail is wanted.
To keep definitions concise, they build on each other rather than each term being self-contained. For example, the "Adam and Eve" entry describes them as a "Material Son and Daughter" and their work as an "epochal revelation", terms that have their own entries. The list as a whole is meant to be self-contained, however, with unusual terms used in the definitions also defined on their own.
A ;absonite : A level of reality characterized by things and beings without beginning or ending, transcendent of space and time.
;Adam and Eve : A Material Son and Daughter who came to Urantia from Jerusem approximately 38,000 years ago to "biologically uplift" the human races. They were resident in the Garden of Eden to build a superior race of human beings, and their teachings to surrounding tribes constituted an epochal revelation. They defaulted in their mission early on, and the human races were only marginally improved. Due to their default, they were unable to live indefinitely, and eventually experienced mortal death. Since they repented and their default was from an error of judgment rather than rebellion, they were granted Thought Adjusters, survived death, and progressed through the mansion worlds.
;adjutant mind-spirits : The functioning of mind, even in primitive animals, is described as leading to ministry in those minds by the local universe Mother Spirit, through the adjutant mind-spirits. The book says that the adjutants are difficult to describe, that they should not be regarded as entities, much less personalities, but are more like circuits. Seven types are described. As material mind evolves, more of the adjutants are able to function. In order of appearance of activity, the adjutants are: intuition, understanding, courage, knowledge, counsel, worship, and wisdom. The ability of a mind to receive ministry from the spirit of worship "is the badge of spiritual-ascension candidacy" and differentiates a creature from soulless animals. Andon and Fonta are described as the first evolutionary mortals on Urantia where the adjutants of worship and wisdom were able to function.
;agondonter : In the afterlife, those who have survived from sin-isolated worlds such as Urantia are said to have shown that they can "believe without seeing, persevere when isolated, and triumph over insuperable difficulties even when alone." They are grouped together and known as agondonters, and tend to be entrusted early on with assignments in the afterlife "where unquestioned faith and sublime confidence are essential."
;Ancients of Days : Powerful celestial beings that are the highest rulers of the superuniverses. Only 21 are in existence, with three stationed at the headquarters of each superuniverse. The Ancients of Days are the beings who make the final judgment as to whether a given mortal survives death or not for eternal advancement.
;Andon and Fonta : A brother and sister who lived approximately 1 million years ago and were the first evolutionary mortals on Urantia to receive Thought Adjusters. Their progeny went on to found the human race. They are said to be on permanent assignment on the first mansion world to greet new arrivals from Urantia to the afterlife.
;angel : A ministering spirit of time. Angels are described as taking origin in the Infinite Spirit, the third person of the Paradise Trinity. Angels do not have material bodies, but are definite and discrete spiritual beings with personalities and minds. The lower angels, especially seraphim, perform many tasks to assist mortals with spiritual advancement. Mortals do not become angels in the afterlife, but if they survive, they eventually pass through a stage of development equal with angels.
;architectural sphere : A world that is designed and constructed by celestial beings rather than arising from natural causes. Headquarter worlds (e.g., for local systems, constellations, local universes, etc.) are architectural spheres.
B ;Bright and Morning Star : In the earliest times of a local universe, before the creation of any other native local universe beings, the first combined act of a Creator Son and Mother Spirit results in the creation of a high spirit personality called a Bright and Morning Star. Only one such being is possible for each local universe. A Bright and Morning Star is not a creator or teacher, but an exceptional administrator, and acts in a chief executive capacity for the local universe. The Bright and Morning Star of Nebadon is Gabriel.
C ;Caligastia : See Planetary Prince.
;central universe : An immense, perfect, divine creation at the center of all reality, consisting of Paradise and Havona. Unlike the evolutionary seven superuniverses under development, the central universe is eternal and has always existed as a perfect creation. The central universe is separated from the superuniverses by two counter-rotating belts of "enormous dark gravity bodies", which hide it from view and serve to stabilize it gravitationally.
;Conjoint Actor : See Infinite Spirit.
;constellation : A unit of astronomic organization that consists of 100 local systems (approximately 100,000 inhabitable worlds).
;Corps of the Finality : The final destination of mortals who have been admitted to Paradise after their long ascent through superuniverse training and the experiences of Havona. Of the seven different Corps of the Finality described by the book, the one specifically said to be the destination of mortals is called the Corps of Mortal Finaliters. A single corp consists of 1,000 individuals, 990 of whom are mortals fused with their Thought Adjusters, and 10 of whom are other types of beings, such as midwayers, seraphim, and Material Sons and Daughters. The book says that it is a high privilege to be inducted into a finaliter corp, and an oath is taken that eternally attaches that person to his or her corp. The book says that it is unknown what ultimate service the Corps of the Finality will perform, but that it is often speculated their work will be in the enormous developing outer space levels.
;Creator Son : A powerful, high spiritual being from Paradise who is "begotten" of the Universal Father and Eternal Son. Also known as the Michael order of Sonship. One Creator Son serves as the father-like godhead of each local universe, in association with one Mother Spirit. Jesus is the Creator Son of the local universe of Nebadon, where Urantia is located. Creator Sons must experientially earn sovereignty in their local universes by incarnating as lower beings seven times. Jesus' incarnation on Urantia was his seventh and final bestowal, after previous incarnations that included experience as a Melchizedek and seraphim, among others. His seventh bestowal — also called the terminal bestowal — was in the form of the lowest intelligent creature of the universe, an evolutionary mortal, and the successful completion of all the bestowals technically classifies him as a Master Michael now instead of simply a Creator Son. The book says that there are more than 700,000 Michael order Sons in existence.
D ;dispensation : Mankind is said to progress in epochs or planetary ages called dispensations. The end of a dispensation is marked by the "adjudication of the realm" by a visiting Son of God and a mass resurrection of sleeping survivors on the mansion worlds. The end of the last dispensation occurred when Jesus completed his bestowal on Urantia. The end of the two prior dispensations were when Caligastia first arrived as Planetary Prince and when Adam and Eve arrived in the Garden of Eden.
E ;Edentia : The headquarters of the constellation of Norlatiadek.
;epochal revelation : The book describes that Urantia has seen "many events of religious revelation but only five of epochal significance." It lists these as: the teachings promulgated at the time when Caligastia was Planetary Prince prior to his rebellion, the teachings of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden prior to their default, the work of Machiventa Melchizedek in Salem contemporary with Abraham, the life and teachings of Jesus, and most recently, The Urantia Book itself.
;enseraphim : Seraphim are said to be able to transport spiritual and morontia beings between distant worlds. Once induced to fall asleep and held securely for travel in a transport seraphim, such a personality is in the state of being "enseraphimed."
;Eternal Father : See Universal Father.
;Eternal Son : Also known as the Second Source and Center and the second person of the Paradise Trinity. The Eternal Son is co-equal with the Universal Father and the Infinite Spirit in divine attributes of omniscience, omnipresence, wisdom, perfection, and love, but is omnipotent only in the spiritual realm. The book describes that spiritual reality has a "spirit gravity", and across the master universe, all spirit gravity focalizes back on the Eternal Son in Paradise. "The Eternal Son is the great mercy minister to all creation. Mercy is the essence of the Son's spiritual character." A difference with Christian traditions is that Jesus is not said to be the Eternal Son — the second person of the Trinity — but a Creator Son.
F ;finaliter : A being who has attained Paradise and joined the Corps of the Finality.
;fusion : The permanent joining of a Thought Adjuster with a mortal mind. Fusion represents the moment when a mortal has attained eternal life. See also translation.
G ;Gabriel : The Bright and Morning Star of Nebadon.
;Garden of Eden : The book describes that there were two Gardens of Eden. The first Garden was begun in anticipation of the arrival of Adam and Eve by advanced supermortal beings remaining from the days of Caligastia. The default by Adam and Eve precipitated events that led to the threat of attack from nearby tribes and abandonment of the first Garden. Since that time, the area is said to have been submerged under water, and is described as being located under the eastern edge of the Mediterranean Sea. The second Garden was developed by Adam and Eve between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers after their default. Eventually, it was abandoned by their descendants due to flooding.
;grand universe : Collectively, the developing seven superuniverses of space and time and the perfect central universe.
;Grandfanda : The first mortal pilgrim to find Havona and achieve Paradise in far ancient times. He is the acting head of the Corps of the Finality on Paradise.
H ;Havona : In the central universe, Havona is a system of one billion enormous worlds arranged in seven concentric orbits, or "circuits." The Havona system is spiritually perfect and physically stable, and each of its worlds is unique. Havona serves as a vast training system for all orders of beings. After finishing training in his or her superuniverse of origin, a mortal will be advanced to Havona where each of the billion worlds will be visited. The book says that "each of these billion study worlds is a veritable university of surprises. Continuing astonishment, unending wonder, is the experience of those who traverse these circuits and tour these gigantic spheres." The Havona training experiences finally prepare a being of mortal origin to attain the Universal Father and be admitted to Paradise.
;Holy Spirit : See Mother Spirit.
I ;Infinite Spirit : Also known as the Conjoint Actor, the God of Action, the Third Source and Center, and the third person of the Paradise Trinity. The Infinite Spirit is "from eternity and without qualification one with the Universal Father and the Eternal Son." The Infinite Spirit is said to be the personification of the Father's love and the Son's mercy, their combined love applied to creation. "Everlasting ministry to mind is the essence of the Spirit's divine character. And all the spirit offspring of the Conjoint Actor partake of this desire to minister, this divine urge to service." A difference with Christian traditions is that the Holy Spirit is not said to be the Infinite Spirit — the third person of the Trinity — but the local universe Mother Spirit.
;instanter -The universe is well supplied with spirits who utilize gravity for purposes of transit; they can go anywhere any time -- instanter -- Solitary Messengers velocity in traversing space is variable,-the record shows that to fulfill this mission my associate messenger proceeded at the rate of 841,621,642,000 of your miles per second of your time.
;Isle of Paradise : See Paradise.
J ;Jerusem : The headquarters of the local system of Satania. Jerusem consists of seven worlds, each with seven satellites. One group of seven satellites is called the mansion worlds, which are said to be the "seven heavens" from tradition, and the place where people who survive death are resurrected into the afterlife.
;Jesus : See Creator Son.
L ;Life Carrier : A class of beings in the local universes that, as their name implies, are responsible for carrying life to new worlds. Life is said to never arise spontaneously, but only through the work of the Life Carriers. Though life progresses through evolution after implantation on a planet, the Life Carriers continue to foster its advancement up until the time when mortals with free will first appear, as happened with Andon and Fonta on Urantia.
;light and life : The term is most often used to describe the final era of planetary development, a utopian status of worldwide accomplishment marked by extraordinary spiritual, cultural and economic advancement. On worlds that become "settled in light and life", the inhabitants tend to become so advanced during their mortal lives that they experience translation rather than death, and since they do not need training on the mansion worlds, they begin their ascent for Paradise on the system or even constellation headquarters. The status of "light and life" is also applied to other units of organization other than individual worlds, such as local systems, constellations, and local universes.
;local system : A unit of astronomic organization that consists of approximately 1,000 inhabitable worlds.
;local universe : A unit of astronomic organization that consists of 100 constellations (approximately 10,000,000 inhabitable worlds).
;Lucifer : The one-time administrative ruler of the local system of Satania. He was highly regarded and distinguished for his capabilities, "a magnificent being brilliant personality", but embraced sin and pursued unlimited "self-assertion and liberty" in a rebellion against the idea that the Universal Father exists and that the Creator Son has the right to rule local systems like Satania. Lucifer contended that local systems should be autonomous. Only two other rebellions of local systems had previously occurred in all of Nebadon. Lucifer's rebellion was allowed to proceed without interference for over 200,000 years, and all celestial beings and mortals touched by it had to choose according to their free will whether they would join. The rebellion was settled with Jesus' bestowal on Urantia, when he won full sovereignty in Nebadon. Lucifer is said to be imprisoned on Jerusem currently, and having rejected offers of mercy and rehabilitation, is expected to be sentenced to personality extinction by the Ancients of Days.
M ;Machiventa : A Melchizedek that performed an emergency incarnation as a human being in Palestine 1,973 years before the birth of Jesus, in order to prevent the loss of revealed spiritual truth and to better prepare the world for Jesus' arrival. The book says that Melchizedeks had previously incarnated as mortals only six other times in the history of Nebadon. Machiventa was the teacher of the Biblical Abraham and was known as "the Sage of Salem", or as the Bible records it, the "king of Salem, priest of the most high God."
; Majeston : Majeston is a true person, the personal and infallible center of reflectivity phenomena in all seven superuniverses of time and space. He is the only existing personality of divinity created by the Supreme Being in functional liaison with the Deity Absolute.
;major sector : A unit of astronomic organization that consists of 100 minor sectors (approximately 100,000,000,000 inhabitable worlds).
;mansion worlds : Seven worlds of the Satania system headquarters of Jerusem where mortals are resurrected into the afterlife. The mansion worlds serve as training spheres where deficiencies from mortal life are corrected.
;mansonia : Both a synonym for "mansion world" and an adjective that means of or pertaining to the mansion worlds, e.g. "mansonia career."
;Master Michael : Also known as Master Son. A Master Michael is a Creator Son who has completed his seven bestowals, incarnating each time as a lower creature in his local universe. While still the same personality afterwards, the experiences of successfully completing all the bestowals adds to a Michael's nature to such a degree that he is designated as a separate order and no longer considered to be only a Creator Son. In completing seven bestowals, Master Michaels earn full sovereignty in their local universes and become supreme regarding all authority, responsibility, and administrative power in them. See also Creator Son.
;master universe : The entire cosmos taken as a whole — the grand universe as well as the four immense outer space levels that remain unorganized and uninhabited. The book says that there are as many stars in the master universe as there are cups of water in the oceans on Earth.
;Material Sons and Daughters : A class of beings native to the local systems that are material and sex-reproducing rather than morontial or spiritual. Also known as that Adams and Eves. When human life evolves on a world to a certain extent, an Adam and Eve visit to take up residence on the planet and begin a program to "biologically uplift" the human races. Their offspring are human but of high genetic caliber, and after a race of their offspring is developed, the offspring begin to mate with the most advanced mortals on the world. On a typical planet, the visiting Materiel Son and Daughter do not experience death but remain as worldwide figureheads until the era of light and life. See also Adam and Eve.
;Melchizedek : A class of beings created by a Creator Son and a Mother Spirit. These beings function mainly in the local universe where they originate, and serve in a wide diversity of roles. The book describes that a Melchizedek named Machiventa once incarnated on Urantia.
;Michael : An order of divine Sonship originating in Paradise. Michaels are also known as Creator Sons. The Creator Son of Nebadon, Jesus, is also interchangeably referred to as Michael of Nebadon, Christ Michael, or simply Michael. Michael is not an archangel as he is in other religious traditions. See Creator Son and Master Michael for more details.
;midwayer : A class of creature that is between angel and human. Two types are described, primary and secondary, with primary midwayers being slightly closer to angels and secondary midwayers being slightly closer to humans. A total of only about 11,000 midwayers are said to be on Urantia. Midwayers are invisible, and like seraphim, do much to serve in advancing the development of mankind. Many midwayers are said to have been lost during the Lucifer rebellion. The book says that traditions of demon possession arose from times when evil midwayers would sometimes manage to take control of weak or unstable human minds. The book says that ever since the Spirit of Truth was poured out on mankind, midwayers are no longer able to possess people. Unlike humans and angels, loyal midwayers remain on planets like Urantia for long periods of time, until the planetary age of light and life is reached, and they can be considered the true permanent citizens of Urantia. They also are said to act as historians. Part IV of The Urantia Book is presented as a historical account of Jesus' life that was sponsored by midwayers.
;minor sector : A unit of astronomic organization that consists of 100 local universes (approximately 1,000,000,000 inhabitable worlds).
;morontia : An intermediary stage of existence between material and spiritual.
;Mother Spirit : Also known as the Holy Spirit and the Creative Spirit. A spirit helper and co-equal partner with the Creator Son in managing a local universe. The Mother Spirit originates from the Infinite Spirit and inside a local universe is the source of all mind to its intelligent creatures, the source of the seven adjutant mind-spirits, and the creator of the angels that are native to the local universe.
;Mystery Monitor : Synonym for Thought Adjuster.
N ;Nebadon : The name of the local universe where Urantia is located.
;Norlatiadek : The name of the constellation where Urantia is located.
O ;Orvonton : The name of the superuniverse where Urantia is located. The Milky Way galaxy is said to be the nucleus of Orvonton, with associated galaxies from the Local Group such as the Large Magellanic Cloud also described as included. The book says that Orvonton consists of more than 10 trillion stars and 1 trillion inhabitable worlds.
;outer space levels : Beyond the seven superuniverses, four enormous outer space levels are described. These are said to be almost unimaginably vast but also uninhabited. Almost all galaxies seen in modern astronomy would belong to these outer space levels.
P ;Paradise : Also known as the Isle of Paradise. The center of all creation, the eternal dwelling place of God, and the ultimate destination of people who survive death.
;Paradise Trinity : The three persons of Deity who are eternal and infinite: the Universal Father, Eternal Son, and Infinite Spirit.
;Planetary Prince : Each evolutionary world is administered by a lesser celestial being known as a Planetary Prince. Urantia's original Planetary Prince was Caligastia, who joined with Lucifer in rebellion against the Universal Father and Jesus' authority in the local universe as Creator Son. Caligastia is said to be the devil from tradition (see also Lucifer and Satan). During his incarnation 2,000 years ago, Jesus settled the Lucifer rebellion and assumed the title of Planetary Prince of Urantia. He has since delegated the role to Machiventa the Melchizedek, who serves as vicegerent Planetary Prince. Caligastia is said to still be on Urantia and capable of trying to execute evil plans, but also is said to be relatively powerless.
;psychic circle : See seven psychic circles.
R ;reflectivity : A method in the universes of time and space that allows higher spiritual beings to see, hear, sense, and know all things as they transpire. "Reflectivity appears to be omniscience within the limits of the experiential finite."
;reserve corps of destiny : "Living men and women who have been admitted to the special service of the superhuman administration of world affairs." They are mostly unaware of their selection to be in a corp and are unconsciously trained by celestial beings in preparation to act in planetary emergencies. The book says that at the time it was written, only 962 people in the world were in these corps, less than 20 of whom were wholly aware of their status as reservists. The work of reservists is said to be only rarely recognized in human history.
;revelation : A technique for expanding religious ideas and identifying truth. Revelation occur in an individual's personal life experience as "autorevelation" through the work of the Thought Adjuster. Revelation of significant worldwide importance by other celestial being(s) can occur as "epochal revelation". "Revelation is a technique whereby ages upon ages of time are saved in the necessary work of sorting and sifting the errors of from the truths of spirit acquirement."
S ;Salvington : The capital of the local universe of Nebadon. Jesus, the sovereign of the local universe, holds his residence on Salvington.
;Satan : The first lieutenant of Lucifer, who joined in Lucifer's rebellion along with Caligastia. Satan represented Lucifer in the high councils of the constellation administrators, and also represented him on Urantia and other worlds. Satan was still allowed to visit Urantia until about the time The Urantia Book was written, but is now detained on the Jerusem prison worlds.
;Satania : The name of the local system where Urantia is located.
;seraphim : An order of angel created by the Mother Spirit for service and ministry in each local universe. Seraphim are only slightly higher than humans and midwayers on the scale of creature existence and are active in promoting the spiritual progress of humans. People who attain the third psychic circle have a seraphim assigned to watch over them as a personal guardian angel. Upon mortal death, seraphim are responsible for the safekeeping the soul of a survivor until it is reunited with its Thought Adjuster on the mansion worlds.
;seven psychic circles : Levels of human attainment in personality development. As the circles are reached, the Thought Adjuster is able to increasingly function. Progress is made by making decisions. The circles vary widely between people, but three are noted in particular. The seventh and lowest circle is reached when a human develops his or her first powers of personal choice, the ability to attain spiritual individuality. This is signified by the functioning of the seven adjutant mind-spirits, the influence of the Holy Spirit, the first functioning of the Spirit of Truth, and the reception of a Thought Adjuster. The third circle is a level of achievement where the human receives a personal seraphim as guardian angel, allowing the Thought Adjuster to be much more effective. The first circle is the final circle of achievement. At this level, the human mind and indwelling Thought Adjuster achieve their highest relationship possible prior to death or translation.
;sleeping survivor : Mortals who attain the third psychic circle in life are given a personal guardian angel and so are able to be taken directly to the mansion worlds after death. People who do not attain this level remain unconscious as a sleeping survivor after death and are not resurrected into the afterlife until the end of a dispensation. The end of the last dispensation was when Jesus resurrected from the dead, at which time all sleeping survivors from the days of Adam and Eve up until that point were awakened on the mansion worlds. Time is nonexistent to sleeping survivors, five days is the same as five thousand years.
;soul : A morontia development in a mortal that grows as a result of free will decisions to become more like God. The soul is a joint development of the human will and a person's Thought Adjuster, and has the capacity to survive death.
;Spirit of Truth : Also known as the Comforter. After Jesus ascended to heaven, he poured out this spiritual influence on all mankind on Pentecost. The book describes that the Spirit of Truth serves as the "conviction of truth" in a religious believer. Another aspect of the Spirit of Truth is that a person does not become conscious of it directly as they can their Thought Adjuster. The indication that a person is being led by the Spirit of Truth is that they become increasingly conscious of the importance of Jesus. A difference from some Christian faiths is that the Spirit of Truth is described as a spiritual influence separate from the Holy Spirit.
;superuniverse : A unit of astronomic organization that consists of 10 major sectors (approximately one trillion inhabitable worlds). Seven superuniverses are said to exist. They are evolutionary in nature and remain unfinished in material and spiritual development.
;Supreme Being : Also termed God the Supreme. Unlike the three persons of the Paradise Trinity who are eternal, the Supreme Being is a manifestation of God that is evolving and incomplete. The Supreme Being is an "experiential" person of Deity rather than "existential". The person of the Supreme Being is currently shrouded in mystery.
;system : See local system.
T ;TA : Abbreviation of Thought Adjuster commonly used by readers.
;Thought Adjuster : A fragment of the Universal Father that is given to dwell in a human mind to help guide the person toward more spiritualized thinking. Complete identification with the indwelling Thought Adjuster and trust in its guidance is what leads a mortal to eternal life.
;translation : When a human fully identifies with his or her Thought Adjuster, fusion occurs and they become one inseparable entity for all eternity. Normally, this event occurs in the afterlife on the mansion worlds, but in rare instances, it occurs in mortals who have become extremely advanced spiritually on Earth. The person escapes the experience death and is taken directly to the afterlife, their material body consumed in a fiery light. Enoch, who is recorded in the Old Testament as an ancestor of Noah and the father of Methuselah, is said to be the first person in Urantia's history to be translated. In the advanced planetary eras of light and life, most people experience translation rather than death.
;Trinity : See Paradise Trinity.
;TUB : Abbreviation of The Urantia Book commonly used by readers.
U ;UB : Abbreviation of The Urantia Book commonly used by readers.
;Ultimaton : Ultimatonic matter -- the prime physical units of material existence, the energy particles which go to make up electrons. The ultimaton, the first measurable form of energy, has Paradise as its nucleus. ;Universal Father : Also known as the Eternal Father, the First Source and Center, and the first person of the Paradise Trinity. The book says that the Universal Father is the God of all creation, and should first be considered as a creator, secondly as a controller, and lastly as an infinite upholder. The Universal Father has never revealed himself by name but is only known by his nature. The Universal Father is said to be a mystery because of the infinite scope of all his attributes, but the life of Jesus is described as the fullest revelation of the Universal Father possible for mortals. The Father's injunction to each creature with mind in the universes of time and space is to "be you perfect, even as I am perfect." He provides guidance to such creatures through the gift of a Thought Adjuster.
;universe : The Urantia Book uses the term "universe" to denote a number of different scales of organization. A superuniverse is roughly the size of a galaxy or group of galaxies. A local universe is described as approximately .00001 the size of a superuniverse. The modern dictionary definition of universe — all existing matter and space taken as a whole — is referred to as the "master universe". When the term "universe" is used alone, the type of universe usually can be inferred from the context. See also central universe, superuniverse, local universe, grand universe, and master universe.
;Urantia : The name of the planet Earth. Urantia is said to have suffered from exceptional setbacks in its spiritual development, including the rebellion by Caligastia and the default of Adam and Eve. Although a dark world currently isolated by sin and among the least of all evolutionary worlds, Urantia is also the recipient of exceptional compensations, most notably the incarnation of Jesus. Urantia is also described as unusual from a biological perspective. On one in ten inhabitable worlds, the Life Carriers are allowed to make greater deviations from standard life designs, in order to experimentally attempt improvements that can then be used on future inhabitable worlds. Urantia is one such life-experiment world, or "decimal planet."
;The Urantia Book : An elaborate, highly detailed book said to be authored by celestial beings as an epochal revelation to the world.
;Uversa : The capital of the superuniverse of Orvonton.
