Gloria Dasher

Gloria O. Dasher is a former African-American activist who became known in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania in 2004 in her failed bid to get unregistered African-Americans to register to vote, and then to vote Republican.
The single mother, who had previously lived on welfare, was angered at the Democratic Party following the passage of the Welfare Reform Act of 1996 during former president Bill Clinton's administration. The former Democrat's response was to join the Republican Party and support George W. Bush for president.
Dasher became active in 2004 following the nomination of John Kerry by the Democratic Party. She appeared on Fox News and several Philadelphia area news stations, announcing her plan to encourage 10,000 unregistered African-Americans to vote. The South Philly native explained why she believed the Republican Party was ideal for African-Americans and other disadvantaged minorities. Though she stopped short of calling Clinton a 'racist,' she went back in history to attribute much of the suffering of African-Americans to Democrats.
It is not known if Dasher achieved her goal. But with Kerry winning Pennsylvania by 144,248 votes, Dasher's objective by far would not have changed the results. Still, the failure to capture Pennsylvania did not prevent Bush from winning the 2004 election.
Dasher's legacy
Following the 2004 election, Dasher faded into oblivion and has since never appeared publicly.
Dasher's idea of increasing votes through unregistered voters was used in the campaign of Barack Obama in 2008.
Dasher, an Evangelical Christian, has stated her pride in her initials, G.O.D. She says her mission is divine.
