eBay Auction Scandal
On March 12th, 2010, a man who goes by the on-line handle 'Hitman' successfully placed the winning bid on a . The final bid amount was $29,100. After meeting all of the financial requirements outlined in the legally binding auction contract and showing up, in person, at the Glenn E. Thomas dealership, the dealership refused to accept final payment to complete the sale of the vehicle. Presumably, the dealership wishes to back out of the sale because the final bid price was an amount they were unsatisfied with despite the availability of tools at their disposal to set minimum bids and reserve prices.
As a result of the recent controversy, which has pulled together automotive enthusiasts from around the world, Glenn E. Thomas Dodge has begun to receive numerous phone calls from outraged consumers, advocacy groups, and the media, all attempting to investigate the issue. Because of the volume of calls and their degree of scrutiny, the dealership has stopped answering all phone calls placed to their sales line.
It is speculated that Glenn E. Thomas Dodge is under fire from Chrysler and is about to lose its Five Star rating over this and similar issues with the dealership's performance.
Community response
Hitman started a thread on the Dodge Challenger Forum on March. 13, 2009. The thread represents one of the largest gatherings of automotive enthusiasts in the world and has since garnered over 250,000 views in less than 4 days. The thread has drawn new members to the forum who have signed up just to show support for Hitman. Many of these members are from online clubs based as far away as the United Kingdom and Australia and have no interest in the Dodge Challenger or even the Dodge brand itself, but all share a common interest in automobiles and have banded together to support one of their kind.
