Gerlinde Thomas

Gerlinde Thomas was born (of Austrian parents) and raised in, Victoria. During her teens she enjoyed sketching. From the age of 21 she worked in IT, traveling extensively through Europe and living in the US.
In 2000, she had an overwhelming impulse to start painting - initially, with a strong desire to produce beautiful people in definitive settings; taking her queues from black and white photographers she admired over the years.
Over time, she started to create works with a narrative. While working on each piece, imagining a story around the scene and the person within the work. The perceived voyeuristic nature of figurative painting also intrigues her and to that end, she hopes to deliver works that strip this perception and substitute the viewers thoughts with works that depict the female form as soft, sensual, strong and a resilient force of nature.
She aims to create works that appear real and tell a unique story. More recently she has transitioned to producing abstract environments in order to create a mood, while cradling a figure in a moment of time and hopes to draw the viewer into their own narrative of the work.
In 2014 Gerlinde's Exhibition "On The Face Of It" was held at the Lost Bear Gallery in Katoomba (Lost Bear Gallery). This exhibition portrayed 30 Artists living in the Blue Mountains, with adjunct stories outlining the artists' passions. The Exhibition was opened by Mark Tedeschi
In 2013, Gerlinde submitted her first Archibald Prize entry with a portrait of Chris Kirby
Gerlinde's portrait of Christine Townend from the Exhibition appears in Christine's article
