Genji Inc

Background
Genji, Inc. is a company which provides sushi and Japanese cuisine to a number of gourmet grocery stores and food retailers. Headquartered in Philadelphia, PA, the company currently operates over 80 sushi bars and sit-down restaurants in 17 U.S. states and in the U.K. The ingredients used are all-natural, and do not include any preservatives, flavor-enhancers (MSG) or artificial food coloring. Fish is increasingly sourced from suppliers who use sustainable fishing practices which do not deplete the fish populations or damage the environment.
Genji employs, trains, and certifies approximately 700 sushi chefs throughout all of its stores, making it the largest independently-operated (non-franchise-based) sushi company in the U.S. The current product mix includes daily prepared sushi available in white, brown, or multi-grain rice, as well as various side dishes like edamame, dumplings, miso soups, spring rolls. In addition Genji Inc. also markets their own brand of packaged soy sauce, salad dressing, ginger, & wasabi.

Origins
Genji began as a mom-and-pop restaurant located in Philadelphia, PA, serving sushi and Japanese cuisine. In the late 1990’s, Whole Foods Market invited Genji to be their sushi provider at several stores in the Mid-Atlantic region. Building on this successful partnership, Genji expanded into new locations throughout the Eastern States. The Company also operates Wholesale operations, providing sushi rice and other food items on a large-scale.
Brands
Within Genji Inc., there are currently two brands in operation, Genji and Genji Express. The Genji Express brand is used solely in Whole Foods Market while the Genji brand logo (pictured above) is used in all other ventures. The circle is a variant of a letter "G" and represents bringing people together, well-being, and commitment to health. At the center of the circle, the dot or "head" represents a precious jewel while the "legs" and "arms" symbolize water and purity. Combined, the logo conveys the companies focus on organic, all-natural, and sustainable qualities.

Management
As of March 2008, the members of the company’s senior leadership are Takeshi Yamakawa (CEO & President), Shingo Kanai (COO), Teruko Harada (Finance Director) and Mohammad Haq (Director of Operations).
