The University of Alabama Frozen Tide is a sanctioned club sport that competes intercollegiately in SECHC (South Eastern Collegiate Hockey Conference) of the ACHA (American Collegeiate Hockey Association) Division III South Region. Since 2006, Bama Hockey and the Frozen Tide has hosted sporting events for the Greater-Birmingham area at the Pelham Civic Complex. The Organization's Inception The University of Alabama is a major research university in the city of Tuscaloosa, AL. Many students of The University had an interest in the game of ice hockey, but no facility or support to play while at school. In 2004, under the leadership of Will Damaré, Adam English, and Josh Stokes a UA Student Organization Constitution was formed. Bama Hockey The creation of the Frozen Tide was strategically modelled to endure many of the growing pains that the organization would encounter. The UAH (University of Alabama in Huntsville) Charger Ice Hockey Team has successfully brought Division I NCAA Ice Hockey south of the Mason-Dixon Line since its club operations in the late 1970's. Based off of the UAH model, founding students and parents began to develop Bama Hockey to provide "student-athletes with the option to continue their hockey career at the collegiate level while enjoying the benefits of attending a major university that is a part of the SEC". The organization is structured as such: # The Frozen Tide Hockey Team elects student officers who are ultimately responsible for the operations of the program. There is a Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President, and President who represent 30 student-athletes on roster. # The Bama Hockey Booster Club is a sactions not for profit that operates under the restrictions set by the student officers. These volunteers and student interns work under a collaborative Board of Directors to provide game day operations, marketing and public relations efforts, and ticket and merchandise sales. Proceeds from the Booster Club directly support the expenses of the Frozen Tide and affiliate charitable organizations # A volunteer coaching staff and management team, as assigned by the Student Board, provides interaction with the SECHC and ACHA governing bodies and directs the student athletes through each competition season. 2010-2011 Season The Frozen Tide started the 2010-2011 season with a revamped schedule, an influx of new players, and high hopes. Including games against two national semi-finalists from 2010, University of Central Florida and Florida Gulf Coast, the Frozen Tide have added games with Auburn in the first ever ice cup, and played in the inaugural College Hockey Clash in Columbus, GA. The Frozen Tide defeated both Clemson University and University of Georgia, but Georgia Tech was declared the champion based upon goals allowed. The Frozen Tide ended the fall Semester with a 10-6 record, and ranked 4th in the South region. History and Affiliations The first season of competition for the Frozen Tide was in 2005-2006. The "First Fifteen" roster included students native to the state of Alabama and a few other domestic states. Since then, the team has become highly competitive in filling the ACHA maximum 30 roster positions. Currently one-third of roster positions are held by Alabama residents. Bama Hockey competes in the ACHA Division 3 South Region, and qualified for the 2008 and the 2009 ACHA Division 3 South Regionals. In 2010, Bama Hockey was one of the founding members of the South Eastern Collegiate Hockey Conference. The SECHC was created after two successful tournaments hosted by Bama Hockey at the Pelham Civic Center. The first conference championship was claimed by the University of Tennessee, and the University of Arkansas claimed the second title. The SECHC Championship will be hosted in 2011 at the Columbus Civic Center. Facilities The Pelham Civic Complex in Pelham, AL is the home of the University of Alabama Frozen Tide.
