The Fright Meter Awards are presented annually by the website Fright Meter and honor the year's best in horror. The website also offers reviews of horror films and interviews with those involved in the horror genre, inlcuding Fright Meter Award winners and nominees. The criteria for films to be nominated in a given year for a Fright Meter Award is that the must have had its UNITED STATES theatrical, DVD, or television release (if a Made for Television production) in the given calendar year. Some of the nominees in a given year were released overseas either in the prior year, or in some cases, two or three years earlier. The awards, however, are concerned with when it was released in the United States. The first official awards were presented in 1998. At that time, the website was called Horror Section. However, in 2007, the site name and URL was changed to FrightMeter. At that time, winners were announced retrospectively back to 1974. Future plans for the Fright Meter Awards include presenting winner with an original Fright Meter trophy and eventually conducting an actually ceremony.
